Observatory (Sunday 30 July ’17)

The Observatory was created in 1905 on the highest point in Johannesburg to study the weather and the stars. Observatory was also home of many famous Communists in the anti-Apartheid struggle. On this Eduational photowalk we will visit many historical sites and have models with us too.

We have joined hands with Ishvara from Ancient Secrets and are now offering tours through Jozi’s inner City and old suburbs – combining culture and photography. Ishvara has deep knowledge of the variety of African cultures and traditions and knows the history Jozi intimately. His tours normally take 80 people – but we are limiting our numbers to 20 so we can provide Photographic Instruction simultaneously.

On this workshop you will be visiting The Hoffmannor which was a Communist safehouse in the Sixties, the Indian War Memorial 1901, Joe Slovos home – head of the SACP, House of Dreams – Rusty Bernstein (Freedom Charter), Observatory Girls Primary School 1918 ( nicknamed the “ Red Diaper “ school ), The Johannesburg Obervatory 1905, Home of astronomer Dr Robert Innes, The Astronomy Library and to top it all we will photograph the Magnificent 360* views of Johannesburg.
